Blackburn's Guide to Norfork Lake Area Activities
North Fork & White River Trout Fishing

Few rivers in America have as many trout in them as the North Fork and White rivers. Additionally there are many large trout in these waters as the record books show. Whether you want to fish with, or without a guide, we can help.

World Record Trout Waters
Two of the World's largest brown trout ever caught came out of the North Fork River. Several other line class records have been set in both the White and North Fork rivers.  The North Fork is also famous for the "Grand Slam" of trout fishing - catching four trout species in the same day - brook trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, and brown trout. More than one brook trout weighing over four pounds has been taken from the North Fork. On an average day most people will catch somewhere between 20 and 60 rainbows from 13 to 20 inches long. You can fish from the bank, rent a boat and motor, or go out with professional guides for 1/2 day and full day guided trips. Blackburn's will be glad to help you arrange your fishing trips.

Dry Run Creek - For Kids & Handicapped only!

Dry Run Creek
When you want the young anglers in your family to have a special thrill let them fish Dry Run Creek. Flowing right next to the large North Fork Hatchery, Dry Run Creek enjoys regular stockings of trout in excess of  5 pounds. This hot fishery is reserved for children aged 16 and under and the handicapped. Dry Run is an artificial baits only catch and release stream which adds a greater level of excitement. Bait fishing is allowed in the North Fork, which is right across the road.

Float Trips
The most popular way to trout fish is by boat. River boat rentals are available at several docks along the river. The boats are called "johnboats", which are flat-bottomed boats designed for shallow water use, typically rigged with a 10hp outboard engine. While the boats are very stable it is best to go out with an experienced river guide if you are not familiar with piloting flat-bottomed boats in a river. Float trips can be 1/2 day or full day. Some guides offer a shore lunch where they cook your morning catch for you. Guide services outfit anywhere from one to forty boats in a trip.

Wade Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing
Fly Fishing is very popular on the area's two rivers. Both the North Fork and the White River are "tailwaters", meaning they are dammed upstream for electrical generation. The water comes from regulated water releases through the dam so water levels in the rivers fluctuate daily. At certain times of the year water releases are low. This allows some of the best wade fishing in America. Fly fishers from around the world come for a chance at another world record trout. If you are a wade fisher, give us a call and we'll help you plan a trip. Many fly fishers do fish the river from a boat.
